GLP-1 weight loss programme
The Medvyy GLP-1 programme provides access to clinically supervised weight management using semaglutide and tirzepatide-based medications (including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro).
GLP-1 Glucagon-like Peptide-1 receptor agonists are injectable medications that mimic a naturally occuring gut hormone to regulate appetite, slow gastric emptying, and improve insulin sensitivity.
Medications in this class include semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro®), administered as once-weekly subcutaneous injections.
These medications were originally developed for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and have demonstrated significant weight reduction efficacy in multiple large-scale randomised controlled trials.
- GLP-1 medications are prescription-only and will only be dispensed following a doctor consultation and prescription
- You have been made aware of common side effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and injection site reactions
- The medication requires refrigeration at 2–8°C at all times and you have confirmed access to appropriate storage
- The medication is administered via weekly subcutaneous injection and you have confirmed you are able or willing to self-administer or have assistance to do so
- Results vary between individuals and Medvyy makes no guarantee of specific weight loss outcomes
- Medvyy is not responsible for outcomes resulting from non-compliance with the doctor's instructions
05.1
Indications of Treatment
Medvyy offers GLP-1 therapy for adults meeting one or more of the following criteria:
- Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher
- BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher with at least one weight-related comorbidity (e.g., hypertension, dyslipidemia, Type 2 Diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease)
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus requiring improved glycaemic control and/or weight reduction
05.2
Prescribed Medication
The specific medication, starting dose, and target dose will be determined by your prescribing physician and documented prior to treatment commencement
05.3
Regulatory Status of Medication (Mandatory Disclosure)
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is the Nigerian regulatory body responsible for approving medicines for legal sale in Nigeria. You must be aware of the current position set out below before consenting to treatment.
- Ozempic® (semaglutide up to 2 mg) — not currently registered in the NAFDAC database for legal sale in Nigeria
- Wegovy® (semaglutide 2.4 mg) — not registered with NAFDAC as at the effective date of this document
- Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) — registration status to be confirmed with your physician at time of prescription
- Prescribing GLP-1 medications for weight management in Nigeria therefore constitutes off-label prescribing
05.4
Off-Label Prescribing
Off-label prescribing is the clinical use of a licensed medicine for an indication outside its formal product licence. This is a legally and ethically accepted medical practice in Nigeria and internationally when supported by clinical evidence and accompanied by the patient's fully informed consent. Your prescribing physician accepts personal clinical responsibility for this decision.
By accepting this terms, you acknowledge that you have been fully informed of the regulatory status of these medications in Nigeria and expressly consent to treatment on this basis

Risks Side Effects and Complications
07.1
Common Side Effects (More than 10%)
- Nausea — the most frequently reported effect, typically during dose escalation and improving with time
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea or Constipation
- Reduced appetite — an intended mechanism but may feel uncomfortable in the early weeks
- Fatigue, particularly within the first 4–6 weeks of treatment
- Injection site reactions (redness, bruising, itching)
07.2
Less Common Side Effects (1–10%)
- Gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) — persistent nausea, bloating, and early satiety
- Hypoglycaemia — particularly in patients also taking insulin or sulphonylurea medications
- Tachycardia (elevated heart rate) — more common at higher doses
- Hair thinning — typically secondary to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect
- Muscle mass reduction — if weight loss is rapid and dietary protein intake is insufficient
07.3
Rare but Serious Complications - Seek Emergency Medical Attention Immediately
EMERGENCY WARNING SIGNS - Go to the hospital immediately if you experience any of the below.
- Severe abdominal pain radiating to the back (possible pancreatitis)
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine (possible hepatobiliary disease)
- A lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness of voice (possible thyroid tumour)
- Severe allergic reaction — facial swelling, throat tightening, difficulty breathing
- Sudden vision changes or deterioration
- Persistent vomiting with inability to retain fluids (risk of dehydration and acute kidney injury
07.4
Thyroid Warning
Animal studies have shown an association between GLP-1 receptor agonists and thyroid C-cell tumours. This has not been confirmed in human clinical trials. However, patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2) must not use these medications under any circumstances.
07.5
Renal Considerations
GLP-1 receptor agonists have demonstrated renoprotective properties in clinical trials. However, vomiting and reduced fluid intake can precipitate dehydration and acute kidney injury (AKI), particularly in patients with pre-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patients with CKD will be placed on a closer monitoring schedule and dose adjustments may be required in advanced CKD stages.
08
Contraindications
GLP-1 receptor agonists are not suitable in the following conditions:
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)
- Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
- History of acute or chronic pancreatitis
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Plans to become pregnant within next two months
- Severe gastrointestinal disease (e.g., gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel disease)
- Known allergy or hypersensitivity to GLP-1 receptor agonists or their excipients
- Less than 18 years of age
09
Baseline Investigations & Monitoring
09.1
Required Before Starting Treatment
- Fasting blood glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c)
- Urea, creatinine, and estimated GFR (eGFR) — kidney function
- Liver function tests (LFTs)
- Full fasting lipid profile
- Thyroid function tests (TSH and free T4)

- Urine dipstick and albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) where clinically indicated
10
